If you take games such as Distant Worlds it might have a pretty ugly UI but it is very functional and the game has a very strong identity and it is well balanced and it has a pretty competent AI. My absolute main complaint in Stellaris is one of execution and failure to make a coherent game with a unique and structured identity and making mechanics actually a deep foundation that connects well with each other and fun to interact with. In my opinion Stellaris has mainly gone from bad to worse in most respects. I was somewhat excited for a space 4x grand strategy game when Stellaris was announced but after they revealed their boring economy concept of the game that excitement was reduced allot. I have not enjoyed any new game from Paradox in the past three or four years now and to be fair I probably don't give them much chance anymore either. In my opinion Stellaris is just a good example on what has been wrong with Paradox for a while, they simply don't make interesting and fun games anymore, at least not the kinds that I enjoy. So, how are things right now? Does anything actually happen, or is it still just one long wait for the crisis? I'm finding the AI in CKIII almost too aggressive, and EU has always required an eye on expansive powers What's odd is that I really don't usually find this an issue in Paradox games. It reminds me slightly of CKII several DLC in, which slowly turned towards unplayable before it finally came back to life in later patches. The AI just does not seem able to deal with the weird pile on of systems that Stellaris has become. Occasionally other powers would declare war on it, never take a planet, and then come to terms. I began bordering a determined exterminator, and was initially both quite alarmed and excited. My most recent, which was played shortly after federations was released, was very similar. I don't think a single planet was taken by any AI empire. One saw AI that scarcely declared war, and when it did nothing occurred. In the two major campaigns I've played since then nothing has happened. People will always, always moan about AI, but it was at least functional. Empires rose and expanded, the galaxy was interesting and dynamic. One tended to come to dominance if you didn't act, and balancing your own internal issues against the ever present threat of a single, unbeatable opponent was always a concern. I rarely play as an aggressive nation, but you always had to consider what the other empires were doing. My main issue is the AI, primarily: it does not do anything. Alloys and the new planet system didn't really help, nor do what they set out to do, but I can tolerate those. But ever since then, I haven't enjoyed a single game. Now, I remember a lot of moaning at the time, and to be clear, I have no actual issue with that mechanic.
